About the Program
The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation is focused on supporting faculty who are interested in incorporating social innovation and entrepreneurship into new or existing classes and/or proposed projects that serves to deepen knowledge of students interested in the field and faculty impact in the community.
As part of the fellowship, faculty members are expected to:
- Advance a class-related or community initiative that advances the teaching and practice of social innovation and entrepreneurship;
- Participate actively in the Sullivan peer-learning community including pre-scheduled calls with peer Sullivan Faculty Fellows as well as one-on-one calls with the Fellowship Coordinator;
- Attend a fall and spring full-day retreats in Raleigh, NC including giving a final presentation about their project over the course of the year;
- Upon graduating from the Fellowship, participate as an alumni mentor and active participant in the Sullivan community
- Serve as a “Sullivan faculty ambassador” on their campus – connecting students, faculty, and administrators to opportunities within the Sullivan community; and
- Allow Sullivan to showcase their work and your profile on its website.
Last year, there were six faculty fellows from five campuses in the inaugural class who are now active alumni participants. This year, there are seven fellows from seven Sullivan colleges.
Meet the Fellows
Cathy Ferris McPherson
Mary Baldwin College
Cathy Ferris McPherson is an Associate Professor of Business, Marketing and Communication for Mary Baldwin College, where she has taught and advised students in the Adult Degree Program for more than two decades. She was awarded the Bertie Wilson Murphy Distinguished Chair in Business in 2012. She has more than 25 years of experience in all aspects of marketing, specializing in the areas of consumer behavior, internal branding, and strategic brand development.
Dr. Boris Abbey serves as the Lundy Chair of the Philosophy of Business at Campbell University. Abbey is a licensed attorney in North Carolina and passionately provides pro-bono business consulting and legal services to non-profit organizations and aspiring entrepreneurs. He has also worked extensively with KidzCare Pediatrics, PC, North Carolina’s largest pediatric practice, helping them grow from one practice in 2003 to over 13 practices in 2015. Abbey is also the founder of MedSol Inc., which provides health care consulting in developing nations and is assisting the establishment of a hospital in India. Prior to entering his professional career he served in the United States Marine Corps and US Army and he is active supporting veteran causes.
Sewanee: The University of the South
Pradip Malde is a professor of art at Sewanee teaching courses in Art, Environmental Studies, the Finding Your Place program for freshman and the Interdisciplinary Humanities Program. He is co-founder and director of the Haiti Institute in Sewanee, and a Steering Committee member of Sewanee’s Center for Engaged Learning. Malde is trained as a photographer, and has more than three decades of experience as a teacher of photography, lens-media and documentary studies, and of working as a photographer. Much of his work considers the experience of loss and how it serves as a catalyst for regeneration. He is currently working in rural communities in Haiti and Tennessee, designing models for community development through photography.
Susan Conradsen is an associate professor of psychology and the director of the women’s & gender studies program at Berry College. She is a licensed clinical psychologist with specializations in health psychology, girl studies, mothering studies, gender and media, and activism.
Tonia Warnecke is an associate professor of social entrepreneurship & business and co-director of the Center for India & South Asia at Rollins College. She was the 2013 Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in International Development Studies at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. She is an economist specializing in international development processes and policy. At Rollins, Tonia co-designed the social entrepreneurship major, and actively participates in strategic planning for social entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives. She serves as founding coach in the Ashoka U Commons program for social entrepreneurship education. In addition to publishing widely in international journals, she has been awarded many research honors and grants; presented several papers at the International Labour Organization; and collaborated with the United Nations Research Institute on Social Development. She recently co-edited the Handbook of Research on Gender and Economic Life (Edward Elgar).
Cindy Szadokierski is the executive director of Randolph-Macon College’s The Edge Career Center program, which integrates career preparation into undergraduate education over four years. A Randolph-Macon alum herself, Szadokierski returned to her alma mater following her retirement from a 27-year career at United Airlines. She served in many roles at United, culminating in a tenure as vice president of airport operations/planning and international operations. She has served on Randolph-Macon’s board of associates since 2009 and has worked with many charities, including A New Day Cambodia, which works to support Cambodian children by providing housing, food, and education.
Dr. Holland teaches public policy courses that range from general policy issues to specialized policies such as food policy, economic development, and technology policy. Using a critical analysis perspective, Jody teaches solution-based strategies to enhance the creation and implementation of public policy. In addition, he pursues an engaged scholarship agenda with non-profit organizations that promote rural community development and advocate farmers’ issues. As a researcher, Jody has collaborated with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Highway Administration (FWHA), Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), Delta Regional Authority (DRA), Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), and the National Center for Intermodal Transportation for Economic Competitiveness (NCITEC).
Janna Brown McClain
Mary Baldwin College
The creation of Change-Maker “Incubator” that assists a small number of Berry College students who have a great idea that could benefit society, as well as a strong desire to implement that idea, but who may not have the experience or expertise necessary for success.
Creating a center for social entrepreneurship at Randolph-Macon College. The Center will work within the innovation community in Greater Richmond to create a network of social entrepreneurs, with our campus as the hub. Students and the community will benefit from greater exposure and interaction with one another, a peer learning community, and a more intentional connection to the SE world.
Creation of a course called—Social Innovation and the Psychology of Poverty, that explores the emerging field of social innovation and entrepreneurship. Through the course, we will examine the opportunity for social change through the lens of social science, particularly from a psychological perspective.
Developed a course called Social Entrepreneurship: Innovative Solutions to Global Issues from the Citizen Sector. This course explores issues in global economic development and related topics through the lenses of social entrepreneurship.Students will become familiar with the most pressing global issues and the innovative solutions proposed by social entrepreneurs. More importantly they will reflect on whether and how they themselves can become pro-active citizens of the world through social entrepreneurship.
As part of the fellowship, I focused on two projects: 1) introducing accounting seniors to the concept of Triple Bottom Line through performing a sustainability audit with a local business; and 2) offering a Winter Term course in planning and logistics with a Social Entrepreneurship focus called “Planning to Make a Difference.”
St. Leo University
Develop a new undergraduate social work course that embeds social entrepreneurship projects within the curriculum. Future goal is to expand this to be an interdisciplinary course that includes disciplines such as Sociology’s global studies and Business entrepreneurial course materials and core faculty to develop and teach the course.
