This course is designed to provide a basic introduction to leadership by focusing on what it means to be a good leader. Emphasis in the course is on the practice of leadership. The course will examine topics such as: the nature of leadership, recognizing leadership traits, developing leadership skills, creating a vision, setting the tone, listening to out-group members, handling conflict, overcoming obstacles, and addressing ethics in leadership. Attention will be given to helping students to understand and improve their own leadership performance. As social problems continue to advance, strong leadership from all academic disciplines will need to be able to work together to solve the world’s most complex problems. This class enables students to develop strong leadership tools that assist in self-assessment, emotional intelligence, leading teams, handling conflict as well as other leadership concepts. Finally, this course will explore how to execute technical and conceptual skills among leaders in a changing organizational, community, political, social, and global settings.

Study abroad in Scotland to perfect your leadership skills and drive social impact + innovation!
Embark on a journey to Scotland for one month to study with, and learn from, social entrepreneurs in Europe.
In partnership with the Arcadia University, spend your summer learning from new cultures to broaden how you engage with communities and create change. While abroad, you will explore four concepts critical to leading change:
- Leadership in Practice
- Effective Community Engagement + Assessment
- Principles of Social Entrepreneurship + Innovation
- Storytelling + Communicating for Change
Participants of the program can receive 6 academic credits which can be applied to their home university. Students must take responsibility to get approval from their school prior to traveling. During the program, students will have a chance to meet with local social entrepreneurs through field trips across the country and develop unique initiatives that will strengthen ventures they meet in Scotland. Based in Edinburgh, this program will give you hands-on opportunities to put leadership and social change theory into practice by working directly with those in your host community.
