This April, Troy University recognized three individuals whose lives exemplify the ideals of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award – humility, service, and integrity. Maggie Chapman, Derrick Nobles, and Juliana Bolivar were honored not for singular acts, but for sustained commitments to their communities and professions.
Maggie Chapman: A Compassionate Advocate
Maggie Chapman, a senior Social Work major from Chelsea, Alabama, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to community involvement. As president of Sigma Alpha Sigma, she has led service initiatives that address local needs. Her roles in The ’87, Phi Alpha, and Tau Upsilon Alpha honor societies, along with her position as a student ambassador for the School of Social Work and Human Services, reflect her dedication to both academic excellence and community service. Currently completing an internship with the East Central Mental Health Center, Chapman is poised to graduate in May, ready to continue her advocacy for mental health and social justice.
Derrick Nobles: Leadership Through Service
Derrick Nobles, a senior Accounting major from Mobile, Alabama, embodies leadership that is both inclusive and action-oriented. His tenure as president of the Dean’s Student Advisory Council and past president of the University Activities Council and the 101 Elite Men showcases his ability to lead diverse groups effectively. As a Trojan Ambassador and member of multiple organizations – including the National Panhellenic Council, Student Government Association, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity – Nobles has worked to foster a campus environment that values diversity and engagement. His accolades, such as the 2023 Mr. Trojan Pride and the Lamar P. Higgins Leadership Award, underscore his impact on the university community.
Juliana Bolivar: Empowering Entrepreneurs
Juliana Bolivar, Director of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Troy University, has dedicated her career to supporting small business owners. Raised by entrepreneurs and having started her own business at 16, Bolivar brings personal experience to her role. Since becoming SBDC director in 2021, she has been instrumental in launching initiatives that have led to the creation of 28 new businesses and 52 jobs and secured $1 million in growth capital for entrepreneurs in Alabama’s Wiregrass region. Her recognition as Alabama’s 2023 “State Star” and inclusion in the national Top 40 Under 40 list by America’s SBDC highlight her contributions to economic development.
The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation is proud to honor these individuals, whose lives reflect a deep commitment to service and the betterment of society. Their stories serve as a reminder of the profound impact that dedicated individuals can have on their communities. The Sullivan Award has been presented to a male student, female student, and non-student at Troy University since 1981. Students, faculty and staff nominate candidates for the award.
“We believe that it is appropriate that we present the Sullivan Awards at Troy University,” said Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor. “Our mission is to develop students into leaders with well-defined values who will go out into the world and make a huge difference. We believe that these values are more important today than ever in our history.”
