In our ongoing series reflecting on the lives and legacies of Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award recipients, we turn our attention to the 2022 honorees from King University in Tennessee: Andrea Stansberry and Dr. David Stevens. Their stories, marked by commitment to service and personal integrity, continue to inspire and exemplify the values of Algernon Sydney and Mary Mildred Sullivan.
Andrea Stansberry: A Quiet Strength of Compassion
In the spring of 2022, Andrea Stansberry stood among her peers at King University’s commencement, not just as a graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, but as an inspiring example of selfless service. A native of New Market, Tennessee, Andrea’s collegiate journey was characterized by a perfect blend of academic excellence, athletic dedication, and community involvement.
As a four-year member of King’s cross country and track and field teams, Andrea’s leadership was instrumental in securing the women’s cross-country team’s fifth Conference Carolinas championship in 2021. Her teammates dubbed her the “team mom,” a testament to her nurturing and support of the team.
Beyond the track, Andrea’s commitment to service was evident through her longstanding involvement with the Children’s Hospital in Knoxville, where she served on the Youth Board, and her recognition by the City of Bristol for her volunteerism. Her acceptance into the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Nurse Residency Program marked the beginning of her professional journey in pediatric critical care nursing. Vanderbilt University is also a Sullivan School.
