Robert Pokora’s dedication to service and healthcare exemplifies the true spirit of the Sullivan Award. A graduate of the University of South Carolina and currently a medical student at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Robert’s journey is one of compassion, commitment, and continuous learning.

Robert’s path to medicine was deeply personal. His father’s kidney transplant in 2019, performed by a living donor who was one of Robert’s high school teachers, profoundly impacted him. This experience ignited Robert’s passion for organ transplantation and advocacy, and perhaps shaped his career goals and community involvement.

Advocacy and Leadership – Trew Friends

While attending the University of South Carolina, Robert was deeply involved in healthcare-related activities. As the vice president and later president of Trew Friends, a campus club advocating for organ donation, he worked closely with other dedicated students to educate and inspire their peers. Under his leadership, the club registered nearly a thousand new organ donors, revitalizing programs like the Donate Life duel, a friendly competition between universities to encourage organ donor registration.

Beyond advocacy, Robert dedicated his time to volunteering at the Columbia Free Medical Clinic as a medical assistant and Spanish interpreter. His involvement in research at the Chruszcz laboratory and his internship at the Medical Experience Academy (MedX) in Greenville demonstrate his commitment to both medical science and patient care.

Continuing the Journey in Charleston

Now at the Medical University of South Carolina, Robert continues to embody the values recognized by the Sullivan Award. He volunteers at the student-run Cares Clinic, providing medical services to those in need. Balancing the rigors of medical school with service, he remains committed to healthcare as well as community engagement. When asked about his plans for service or giving back in the future, he explained that he plans to continue volunteering at medical clinics, mentoring future medical professionals, and advocating for health issues. His mention of having an interest in medical missions also speaks to his ongoing commitment to making a difference, both locally and beyond.

A Sullivan Award Recipient

When Robert received the prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award at USC, considered one of, if not the highest honor a graduating senior could achieve at the school, it was a recognition not just of his academic achievements but of his character, service, and leadership. The award is a testament to his dedication throughout his time at the university, and honors his contributions to the welfare of others and his embodiment of the humanitarian spirit of Algernon Sydney Sullivan.

Robert Pokora’s story is one of hope and inspiration. His journey, marked by a blend of personal challenges and triumphs, showcases the impact one individual can have in making the world a better place. The Sullivan Foundation celebrates Robert’s achievements and looks forward to his continued journey in medicine and service.
