The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation recently announced that Josh Nadzam would be their new Student Engagement Director, a role critical in planning and producing the Foundation’s highly successful entrepreneurial weekend camps for college students. A recipient of the Sullivan Medallion himself, Josh brings a wealth of experience, passion, and innovative thinking to his new position.

Josh’s journey with the Sullivan Foundation began at the University of Kentucky, where he was honored with the Sullivan Medallion at graduation. His involvement deepened over the years, from a coach and then to a facilitator at the Ignite retreats. “I’m really excited,” Josh explained, reflecting on his evolving role within the foundation. “My first connection with the Sullivan Foundation was as a student, and over the years I’ve become more involved, especially with the Ignite Retreat.”

Josh’s background in social work, coupled with his experience as Executive Director of On the Move Art Studio, positions him uniquely for this role. He also brings insights from his work with Knowledge Works. Knowledge Works is a nonprofit dedicated to transforming education through personalized learning experiences tailored to each student’s needs. They emphasize innovative teaching practices and competency-based education, preparing students for a rapidly evolving world.

The Ignite Retreat: A Sullivan Foundation Signature

The Sullivan Ignite Retreats profoundly impact students by fostering personal growth and social responsibility, nurturing a supportive community of changemakers. These transformative experiences encourage self-discovery, helping students gain clarity in their passions and career paths, and inspire them to address societal issues through social entrepreneurship. Participants acquire practical skills in project planning, leadership, and communication, essential for impactful community engagement. Additionally, the retreats build a lasting network of like-minded peers, fostering a sense of community and collaboration that extends beyond the event, empowering students to initiate and lead social projects and maintain long-term engagement in social causes and community leadership.

As the newly appointed head of these retreats, Josh is set to bring his unique flair and understanding to the program. “The themes of social impact and creating nonprofits or social good businesses are all there,” he explains. “My hope is to continue the incredible work my predecessor, Spud Marshall, has done, ensuring the retreat remains magical and transformative experience for students.”

Looking forward, Josh emphasizes the importance of staying attuned to the evolving needs of students. “Each year, student’s needs are changing,” he says. “I want to ensure that our programming, whether it’s the Sullivan Ignite retreats or Roadshows, is very specific to what the students are looking for and what they need to be successful.”

Steve McDavid, President of the Sullivan Foundation, praises Josh’s appointment. “Josh is not only a recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award but has also been an integral part of our Ignite Retreats over the years. His transition to Student Engagement Director is a testament to his commitment and vision. We are excited to see the new heights Josh will take us in his new role.”

Josh Nadzam’s ascent within the Sullivan Foundation mirrors his personal mission: to empower, educate, and inspire. As he takes the reins of Student Engagement Director, the Foundation looks forward to a future rich in innovation, student-focused programming, and impactful social change, all under Josh’s dedicated leadership.
