Spend your summer learning alongside European changemakers to broaden how you engage with your own communities.

Over the course of a month, you will explore four concepts critical to leading change:

  1. Leadership in Practice
  2. Principles of Impact Entrepreneurship + Innovation
  3. Effective Community Engagement + Assessment
  4. Storytelling + Communicating for Change

You won’t be confined to a classroom. During this program, you’ll be learning from local leaders in the field.

Meet with social entrepreneurs, political leaders, and non-profit founders. Put leadership and social change theory into practice, while immersing yourself in French culture.

The program consists of two 3 semester credit courses for a total of 6 semester credits. Please inquire with your home university about how to accept these transfer credits.

Leading for Impact + Innovation

This course will introduce you to the emerging field of social entrepreneurship and innovation through a leadership framework. You’ll develop your individual and collective capacities to implement impactful, sustainable, and scalable methods of solving society’s problems.

By the end, create a personalized leadership report to help you understand how you can uniquely lead others.

Designing Creative Communities

Designing Creative Communities

This course will teach you how to effectively engage with a community and identify solutions to pressing local problems. You’ll learn creative storytelling techniques and approaches for how to bring an idea to life from a grassroots perspective.

During the course, you will be responsible for developing an original blueprint for social innovation & change while working with local partners and enterprises.

Students may apply for a limited number of $1,000 scholarships from the CEPA Foundation, and any student from a Sullivan Foundation partner school is eligible for an additional $1,000 needs-based scholarship.

Scholarships are limited until funds are exhausted, so get your application in early!

Strasbourg is unique in that it serves as a political hub of Europe. During the program, you’ll learn about grassroots changemaking efforts, as well as political and top-down bureaucratic approaches.

Program Fee

Fee includes:

  • 6 US academic credit hours (3 for each course)
  • Housing in shared accommodations
  • Site visits and tours around France
  • 24 hour emergency support
  • Airport transfer on official arrival day
  • Daily breakfast
  • Orientation + Welcome and farewell meals
  • Local transportation in Strasbourg (bus pass)

Program Details

Application

Once you are ready to apply, please visit the European Study Center website and click “Apply for Session II” to submit your formal application. Spots are filling quickly and the program will close when we reach capacity.

Lodging + Meals

  • Students will be housed in a 250-year old Chateau at the European Study Center.
  • Bedrooms are dorm-style and there is a shared kitchen, bathroom and common area.
  • Other than breakfast, students are responsible for covering their meal costs throughout the program.

Classes + Site Visits

  • Classes are typically scheduled to take place before lunch each day.
  • Group site visits will be organized for the class to nearby cities. These primarily take place in the afternoon.
  • Students will have most weekends to travel as they wish.
  • Each course will cover 45 instructional hours including the excursions.

Expectations

Class Structure

  • This is NOT a classroom-based program. Students will be in the field, learning in the community, and getting practical + hands-on experience.
    A portion of this class will be delivered online ahead of the trip. These lessons can be watched on your own time and are designed to allow you to spend as much time in the community while in France, rather than in a classroom.
  • Students are expected to participate in all classes and complete assigned homework, readings and projects during the month. As such, students are expected to manage their time appropriately, but are encouraged to make the most of their time abroad and organize their own trips and activities outside of class and scheduled group trips.
