Akheem Mitchell, a 2023 graduate of Rollins College, has distinguished himself through exemplary leadership and dedication, culminating in his receipt of the prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. Mitchell, graduated with a BA in both Political Science and Philosophy, and also minored in African American Studies as well as Ethics.
Mitchell’s leadership journey at Rollins is marked by significant milestones both for himself and for Rollins, including being elected the first Black student body president in the college’s history.
This historic achievement was a source of pride and responsibility for Mitchell. Reflecting on it while still a student, he explained, “March 11th, 2022 marks a historical date for us all. For the first time since the college’s opening, both the Student Government Association President and Vice-President are black. We both want to extend our gratitude to the students who voted for us. In knowing that we have your best interests at heart, we vow that our administration will fight for each one of you. Your voice has been and always will be the pillar of our administration.”
Apart from his role in student government, Mitchell was deeply involved in various aspects of campus life while at Rollins. He served as the vice president of the Black Student Union and as a resident assistant in Cross Hall. His commitment to inclusivity and equity extended to his role on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Initiative Steering Committee. In part and to that end, his election campaign centered on “breaking barriers and building a future,” with a keen focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, financial transparency and awareness, mental health advocacy, and social justice competency.
Raised in Orlando, Florida, Mitchell chose Rollins College for its community atmosphere, small class sizes, and strong school spirit. “I loved the feel of the campus. It just seemed like regular people walking around their neighborhood, he said”
Mitchell’s time at Rollins was also about personal growth and connection. He shared, “The biggest thing I want to experience before I graduate is making new friends and new connections. I’m a firm believer in connecting with different people and being able to make new friends.” His selection as one of the Fiat Lux Award Winners, recognizing his positive contributions in academics, leadership, inclusion, and service, and his receipt of the N. Ronald Pease Service to Campus Award, chosen by his peers, are testaments to his impact at Rollins College.
Akhem Mitchell’s journey at Rollins College is a story of groundbreaking achievements and a commitment to inclusivity, leadership, and community. His commitment to a proactive approach to student governance and community involvement, have set the bar for future leaders at Rollins College.
