Marking 100 Years of Leadership and Service: When Missions Align

As the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation gears up to commemorate a hundred years of honoring service, it finds a strong connection with the ideals of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), an organization equally steeped in the tradition of fostering leadership. Two remarkable individuals bridge these institutions, not only through shared membership but through their active contributions to each organization’s evolving story.

Dr. Jim Vickrey, a name synonymous with academic distinction and a 1964 recipient of the Sullivan Award, has been inducted into ODK’s Board of Trustees. His association with ODK dates back to 1962 when he first became a member. Dr. Vickrey recalls, “It was my first significant national honor, and just two years later I was presented with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award.” His leadership and vision as it related to both organizations were further cemented during his presidency at the University of Montevallo in the mid-1970s, where he was pivotal in establishing an ODK chapter and integrating the institution into the Sullivan network of schools. Reflecting on his most recent on his recent election to ODK’s Board of Trustees, Dr. Vickrey expressed his intentions to “pay it forward” and emphasized his commitment to working collaboratively with honor societies such as the Sullivan Foundation.

Parallel to Dr. Vickrey’s journey is that of Sally Albrecht, a renowned choral composer and conductor whose leadership baton has harmonized many a chorus. Her receipt of the Sullivan Award in 1974 marked the beginning of a trajectory that would see her ascend to the presidency of the ODK Board of Trustees. “Leaders, like musical conductors, set the tone as they work to create balance, harmony, and success through collaboration,” Albrecht said, likening her artistic direction to her leadership philosophy. Her recent appointment to the Sullivan Foundation’s Alumni Advisory Committee is a testament to her profound experience and the depth of her enthusiasm for guiding others.

Stephan McDavid, president of the Sullivan Foundation, speaks highly of both individuals, recognizing the natural alignment between the two organizations. “The Sullivan Foundation believes that students who learn, first-hand, the possibilities of community engagement, leadership, and social entrepreneurship will greatly benefit from their experience,” McDavid stated. He added, “The Foundation’s mission aligns well with Omicron Delta Kappa, and it makes perfect sense that the two organizations share members.”

As the Sullivan Foundation and ODK continue to celebrate and develop future leaders, the synergy between them is without question. They share, not only members like Dr. Vickrey and Sally Albrecht, but also a mission to cultivate a legacy of servant leadership. In the end, the confluence of the Sullivan Foundation and ODK underlines a significant truth: true leadership is less about the accolades and positions one holds and more about the service given and the lives touched. As these two organizations look towards their next century, they do so through the contributions of Dr. Vickrey, Sally Albrecht, and others who embody the very principles both organizations value.
