In January 2025, the Sullivan Foundation will expand its efforts to support recovery from Hurricane Helene through a collaborative service trip to Western North Carolina. This initiative follows an earlier trip in October, when Sullivan staff and community partners worked alongside organizations such as Equal Plates Project, Haywood Street Congregation, and Haw Creek Commons to provide critical aid in the aftermath of the storm.
The October trip left a powerful impression on those who participated. As the Foundation shared, “The resilience and unity we witnessed in the face of such devastation were powerful reminders of the values we strive to instill in our students. We are deeply grateful to stand alongside such remarkable community changemakers.”
Building on that experience, the January trip will bring together Sullivan staff, fellows, past Ignite attendees, university faculty and staff, and Sullivan alumni—unifying all facets of the Sullivan network in one impactful effort. Participants will work on recovery projects such as food preparation and distribution, supporting local farms, and collaborating with nonprofit partners to address ongoing challenges.
For many attendees, the trip is deeply personal. As one student shared, “My family is from Greenville, SC, and we were severely impacted by Hurricane Helene. This trip allows me to give back to others who went through what my family experienced.” Another student said, “The mountains of North Carolina are near and dear to me. Supporting recovery efforts in a place I love makes this opportunity even more meaningful.”
The decision to focus efforts in Western North Carolina reflects the Foundation’s long-standing connection to the region, which has hosted numerous Sullivan Foundation Ignite Retreats and other gatherings over the last decade. “After canceling our retreats in North Carolina due to the recent flooding, we felt a deep pull to support the WNC community,” explained Steve McDavid, the Foundation’s president.
The service trip also offers participants a chance to connect with others who share a passion for service and leadership. As one of the Sullivan Fellows participating explained, “I feel like this trip will help me grow closer to others in the Fellows program and know that, together, we’re making a difference for people impacted by the hurricane.”
By uniting participants from across its network, the Sullivan Foundation is creating an opportunity for meaningful collaboration and service. This trip will not only provide vital support to affected communities but also reinforce the Foundation’s mission to inspire changemakers and foster connection through service.
